Modern Cabo San Lucas has all the action modern travelers crave. Neighboring San Jose del Cabo has quieter, Mexican Colonial charm. Spend a day exploring its historic attractions.
Start in the Center
In the center of San Jose del Cabo, you'll find Plaza Mijares, the center of city life. Everyone comes here to meet and greet their friends and see what's going on. Take a moment to relax in the shade and listen to the strolling musicians.
The church always goes along with a plaza as the center of life in Mexican towns. Iglesia San Jose, the Church of Saint Joseph, is on the site where the Spaniards' original mission was founded. The beautiful mosaic on the front facade tells the story of an unfortunate encounter between a missionary and the local population.
You can then step inside the City Hall, a Spanish colonial-style building with corridors painted in murals with scenes of Baja life.
The Casa de la Cultura cultural center's facade breaks from tradition with bright-colored musicians painted above the entrance.
Stroll the Streets
You'll enjoy the peaceful, colonial flavor of the town simply by strolling the streets. This is also the best way to enjoy the many art galleries in San Jose del Cabo. Simply wander the streets, going from one shop to the next. You can also find Mexican handicrafts from the vendors in Plaza Artesanos.
