What is Solmar? A Hotel? A Fishing fleet? A Scuba Boat? Just what is Solmar? Actually the question should not be what is Solmar but who is Solmar? Then the answer is simple. Sr. Luis Bulnes is Solmar and all it represents.

Originally from Spain, Don Luis, as he is affectionately known locally, arrived in Cabo in 1955 to manage the Pando Tuna Cannery turning this cannery into the largest tuna packing plant in all of Latin America by 1963. Having the vision to see more in this desert landscape than rocks and cactus, Don Luis purchased land from the local ranchers and in partnership with Luis Coppola Sr. built the Finisterra Hotel in 1970. In the late-70's Don Luis sold out his interest at the Finisterra and built the Hotel Solmar on what many consider to be the best location in all the Baja California Peninsula - possibly the world. Built along a stretch of white sand beach with granite cliffs as a backdrop, this captivating location truly bewitches its visitors into a relaxed frame of mind. Perfect for a true getaway vacation.

The Solmar started with only 20 rooms but by 1979 was up to 60 rooms total. By 1993 with the help of his son, Paco and administrator, Victor Chong, Don Luis had successfully opened 2 local restaurants, started Cabo's largest sportfishing fleet, pioneered live-aboard scuba diving to Socorro Islands and elevated the hotel Solmar to the status of the Best Hotel in Cabo. In 1995 five million dollars was invested to remodel the entire hotel solmar into Solmar Suites. Not your common "change the curtains and mattresses" remodel but a true top to bottom renovation that established the new Solmar Suites as The Hotel to stay at while in Cabo.

Very significant to this success was representation in the United States, the main market for Solmar and Cabo. Mr. Richard Wilkes, who had been promoting hotels and fishing in Cabo since 1960, filled this U.S. void. Both the Classic Billfsh Tournament and the Cortez-Pacific Tournament, which started in 1966, were Richard's creation and continued for 25 years. Richard was responsible for establishing travel industry relations such as retail, wholesale, airlines and publications for the new Hotel Solmar since its opening in the late 70's. This business relationship between Don Luis and Richard quickly grew into a strong friendship that to this day is a driving force at Cabo Resort Reservations, the U.S. Representatives for Solmar.
